Back again because later in the night I recalled another way to make water “filters”.(There are blogs about making charcoal in Gotoknow at the moment.) Charcoal is a very good water filter. Together with sand (fine and coarse layers) and (shade)cloth .. we can perhaps make a good water filtering gadget for home use (100-200L/day).—-I had some yonky years ago made a clay pot filter : mix 1 part fine(<1mm particle) charcoal in (1 part) clay and shape that into a 5L pot (I used the coiling strip method; you would have a better method), let it dry and ‘fire’ it well to burn away the charcoal and leave tiny holes in the pot – voila water filter!). I floated the pot in water (in a much larger container) and use the already filtered water in the pot. ….Note I also experiment ed with flour, sawdust, blended leaves,… instead of charcoal. They all work (but flour was more difficult to mix thoroughly). I also made a earth kiln to fir the pots – if you are interested I will talk about that next ;-)
