Ants with wings emerging just before the big rain are of 2 types (male or ‘drone’ and female or ‘queen’). The male only live a few hours. Their aim of life is to mate before they die. The female after insemination usually fly to find an existing colony, land near by the anthill, drop their wings and cheekily make them themselves discovered and adopted into the anthill. Those females that are adopted become queens (and live on to make babies). Those that fail to be adopted die.
