In Aus, there are a number of (reality?) TV shows that spread ideas of 'make-up' or 'make-over' (that is to apply cosmetics to face/body/cladding/clothing/... of persons/houses/pets/gardens/...). In one show (House Rules), run-down houses get 'face-lift' and price0tise unporportionally to the 'real worth' (50% or more...much more appreciation in 1-2 weeks!).

What do they use as cosmetics for houses? Wall-paper, paints, refashioned/modified junk and trinket... any stuff + (so-called) artistic applications ;-)

I guess 'feeling' and emotion are better than money or these days people are turning away from material (things -have) to experiential (emotion - had been) now.
