Gold rush is a powerful economic stimulus. Some people go digging, looking for gold. Some people go selling goods and services (foods, alcohols, tools, drugs, sex, ...). Some people go 'taking' whatever they can. 

The 'gold' can change its name and form. These days a lot of people go to parliament to get their gold!
