Seeing "siila" as "rights" may be a way to explain universal concepts of Buddhism to the world.
I (had written about and so) support siila as rights. In my view
1) Right to Life: all lifeforms (not just human) have a right to live (and protect a livelihood).
2) Right to Possession: all lifeforms (not just human) have a right to own (and protect) property
3) Right to Familial Relations: all lifeforms (not just human) have a right for a family (or associations)
*4) Right to Truth: all lifeforms (not just human) have a right to tell and hear the truth
*5) Right to Wellness: all lifeforms (not just human) have a right to deny intoxicants.
* I think Right to Truth and หลักประกันความมั่นคงของสิทธิในการรับรู้ข้อมูลข่าวสาร are the same in content but different in emphasis. Right to Truth is just that regardless of communication modes. And I see Right to Wellness as a right for all to maintain wellbeing including denying prescriptions, drugs, intoxicants, and any form of stimulants. Animals also have this right and we should keep them sedated or in captivity against their will.
Am I a monk? No. Am I against ท่าน ว. วชิรเมธี? NO.
I do however think of "siila" as universal rights, not just human rights.
