May I keep my one-dimension mind on coconut?
If we look at the World Bank statistics and
Compare Coconut oil-Palm Oil prices we can see that palm oil price is not better than coconut oil price. Another important factor is coconuts can provide many more products at many stages where oil palms provide palm oil and wastes and that about it. In other words, coconuts give growers incomes for young coconuts, more mature coconuts (มะพร้าวห้าว, coconut cream/milk), copra (dry coconut meat) , (virgin/cosmetic and cooking) coconut oil, desiccated (dry) coconut flakes, coir (dry coconut husk fibre), charcoal (from shells), and so on.
But oil palms give growers one income for palm fruits only as other palm oil products are downstream from oil extractors. Clearly, coconut is far better for growers.
See Comparison between coconut oil and copra.
We can see from my posts that the price differences of coconut oil and desiccated coconut from copra show that there are good margins for processing or making coconut products on farm (by the growers or growers' cooperatives) giving jobs and business opportunities for local communities. The technologies and equipment required are not beyond reach of ordinary growers. New designs and improvement can be made to fit each locality.
