Golfer. Born Eldrick Woods on December 30, 1975 in Cypress, California. Woods studied at Stanford University and won amateur US golf titles before turning professional in 1996. He shot to fame after winning the US Masters at Augusta in 1997 - with a record score of 270 - at the age of 21. Woods was the first African-American to do so, as well as the youngest.
In his first appearance at the British Open later that year, Woods equalled the Troon course record of 64. Further successes include the 1999 and 2000 US PGA title, the US Open (2000, 2002), the Open Championhip (2000, 2005), and the US Masters (2001, 2002, 2005). In 2005, he was voted the US PGA Tour Player of Year for the seventh time in nine years. In 2006, at the age of 30, Woods won his eleventh and twelfth professional major golf championships and has more wins on the PGA Tour than any other active golfer.
Woods was the highest paid professional athlete in 2005, having earned an estimated $87 million. His father and mentor, Earl Woods (1932–2006), published a book about his son: Training a Tiger: a Father's Guide to Raising a Winner in Both Golf and Life (1997). Woods married Swedish model Elin Nordegren in 2004; the couple lives in Jupiter Island, Florida
