โควิด ATK - BA.1 หรือ BA.5

There is a growing concern about effectiveness of Antigen Test Kits (ATK, or Rapid Antigen Test - RAT). The question is whether in the ATK tests, the antigens generated in reactions to Delta or BA.1 are sufficiently ‘similar’ to the antigens generated in reactions to BA.4 and BA.5. This is very much the same concern as for วัคซีนโควิด - BA.1 หรือ BA.5 https://www.gotoknow.org/posts/704603 - which prompts upgrade of COVID-19 vaccines to BA.5 based vaccines – by US FDA.

The responses from ATK manufacturers vary from ‘upgrade ATK products to BA.5’ from a few manufacturers down to ‘..these [comments] are scaremongering [lies]..’ from most manufacturers. [Governments are probably waiting for more definitive reports and are distributing ‘old’ stock of ATKs.]

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) says people with COVID symptoms should not consider a negative rapid antigen test result a definitive result. For the reason that negative results means 'not infectious, but may have been infected and the virus is still incubating. (ผลเป็นลบ – ขีดเดียว ไม่ได้ แปลว่า ไม่ติดโควิด – อาจจะคิดแล้ว แต่ร่างกายยังไม่ตอบโต้ แสดงปฎิกริยา โดยการสร้าง แอนติเจน). 

This false negative result is and has been a major concern, probably used as a reason not to include ATK test results in COVID reports. Multiple tests days apart are necessary. This also results in delay (lag) in responding to COVID. Infected people cannot be treated as early but only when the the virus has taken a firm hold. Infected people may also be spreading the virus without knowing, without symptoms, without treatments for a few days before containment or isolation and treatment are applied.

The recommendation is – People who have BA.5 symptoms (mostly just coughing, some may have headaches and or feeling tired or drained) for a few days should seek PCR-RT tests--.

The best strategy is to practice prevention measures: wash hand, mask, and separation. [Exercises and sunlight/outdoors exposure may help.]
