Both were bee experts and bee carers. Both died in their prime of life – too early. Their contribution to the country and bees will remain our valuable legacy for many decades to come. 

Our bees (in Thailand) are under threats from pollution and climate change. Bees are our major pollinators of our fruits and food crops. Bee population is decreasing and will impact our food production (and export) significantly. 

There is no doubt that particulates are killers. As of November 2021 this is the latest WHO estimates of air pollution's death toll and it refers to the year 2016. The 4.2 million deaths from outdoor air pollution are premature deaths “due to exposure to fine particulate matter of 2.5 microns or less in diameter (PM2. 5)”.  Data (2021) for Thailand suggests nearly 40,000 premature deaths are attributed to air pollution.

Research have found:

PM10 is generated primarily from sources such as natural (mineral) and road dust, sea spray, and pollen, while PM2. 5 comes from fuel burning, smoke, industrial processes, transportation, and indoor heating.  PM10 stay  in air for minutes to hours, PM2.5 stay in air for days to weeks.

Bees collected at more polluted sites were far more likely to be flecked with particulate matter containing toxic heavy metals such as arsenic and lead. 

Data suggest that exposure to PM2. 5 in vitro has the potential to induce cellular toxicity as well as hormone dysregulation, oxidative damage, inflammatory response, and interference with mitochondria in first trimester placental cells (HTR-8 cells).

The danger of air pollution to both human and bees (the human food production helpers) is real and eminent.  The source of air pollution is known. [PM2. 5 comes from fuel burning, smoke, industrial processes, transportation, and indoor heating/cooking. ] Because, we are the primary victims, not local councils or governments, we must be the primary solvers and agents for reducing air pollution.

And we have to do it now.
