New Normal - Language

In a time like this under COVID restrictions, there are so many new words and phrases to learn because failure to understand could mean 'life and death' or cause undesirable reactions among friends or people nearby.

I've learned 'ผ่านการประเมิน TSC' (Thai Stop Covid) and TSC+ (ที เอส ซี พลัซ - Thai Stop Covid +) for an official anti-covid campaign; มาตรการความปลอดภัย 6 'DMHT-RC' ([dam hot rock] for Distancing, Mask wearing, Hand washing, Testing for Covid, Reducing crowdedness, and Cleaning); มาตรการเสริม  'SSET-CQ' (Self-care ดูแลตนเอง, Spoon ใช้ช้อนกลางส่วนตัว, Eating กินอาหารปรุงสุกใหม่, Track ลงทะเบียนเข้าออกโรงเรียน, Check สำรวจตรวจสอบ, Quarantine กักกันตัวเอง.); and แนวทาง 7 มาตรการเข้มสำหรับสถานศึกษา (a sandbox safety zone [protocol] in school : see eg. https://www.thebangkokinsight.com/news/politics-general/covid-19/709954/ ). 

These are 'rules' for schools (that means 'teachers' and 'students' must learn and practice religiously). There are also words for Covid-19 testing. 'PCR' (พี ซี อาร์ polymerase chain reaction), ATK (เอ ที เค - Antigen Test Kit; also 'RAT' แร็ท for Rapid Antigen Test). There are some issues just when and how students will get tested while attending classes. One issue is the costs of tests to be paid for by whom. Most students and parents are already stressed by lower incomes to afford many tests necessary to keep face-to-face classes going. We do need careful planning and operations to ensure Covid-safe for students, teachers, parents and support operators (bus drivers, shopkeepers, .. the whole school community). Not just decision makers in far-away offices.

Not all school children will return to hand-on or face-to-face schooling. Some will have to continue learning 'on-line' and alone (I have not heard of 'Zoom'/'Teams'/'Meet'/... classes for kids, but I have heard of 'short videos' channels being used -- one-way communication).

I have learned 'ติด 0' (failed assessment [50%] of homework or tests), ‘ติด ร.’ (failed to hand in 'required' homework or tests), 'มส' ( หมด/ไม่มี สิทธืสอบ ขาดเรียนเกิน, failed to attend enough class hours) and 'มผ' ( ไม่ผ่านเกณฑ์...). These are serious abbreviations (acronyms) that our school children are facing. Any of these can destroy a dream even a life -- Covid or no covid. Children in less fortunate family settings especially in rural areas are learning these without any means to avoid them. Perhaps supports and other chances would be more meaningful. Is this a training for 'corruption' detection avoidance and remedy?
 
But 'no worries' (in Australia it means ไม่เป็นไร, 'not important' or 'never mind'); 'that being said' (all English, พูดไปแล้ว, having said that before); 'wait what' (เดี๋ยว อะไรกันนี่); 'asking for a friend'(ถามให้เพื่อน but really for yourself) and many other phrases are classed (by a university in USA -LSSU) as annoying, verbose and unnecessary in daily speaking.

 

 

I include a picture of a man and a cockatoo in a little chat. I was speaking my language and the bird its language. However we seemed to have made a real good friendly and jolly good time. So different languages do not stop friendship and peace in this world.
