Dictionary of Problem Words and Expressions:

choral & chorale

Each of these terms may be used to refer to a chorus

(a choir, or group of singers),

but chorale more specifically applies to

(1) achoral composition,

(2) a sacred tune, or

(3) a group of singersspecializing in singing hymns.

That is, any band of singers may be referred to as achoral group,

but only a group specializing

in some particular form of music is achorale.

Also, choral is nearly always used as an adjective,

chorale as a noun:

Judy is a member of a choral group.”

Jessie belongs to achorale that sings under the directionof a former concert artist.”
