A fairly convoluted game of giving words meanings ;-)


I have learned that ‘migrate’ is from Latin ‘migrare’ (or migra - to leave a place and to go to another place).


The prefix ‘e-‘ means ‘out’ (as in ‘exit’) so ‘emigrate’ means to leave (‘here’) and go elsewhere.


The prefix ‘i-‘ (‘im-‘ is the way ‘i-‘ elides with the word that follows) means ‘in/into’ so ‘immigrate’ means to come (‘here’) from elsewhere.


I think things are clearer from Latin point of view ;-)
