ให้คำจำกัดความ กริยา “die” ว่า

“เมื่อ บุคคล/สัตว์ หรือ พืช ‘dies’” หมายถึง

“พวกเขา ยุติ การมึชีวิต” = (ตาย)

และ “เมื่อ บุคคล/สัตว์ หรือ พืช ‘is dying’” หมายถึง

            “พวกเขา ‘ป่วย/บาดเจ็บ’ จนกระทั่ง ไม่อาจมีชีวิตอยู่ต่อไปได้”

รูปอื่นๆ ของ “die” คือ “dies” “dying” และ “died” เช่น

               ‘Blake died in January, aged 76.’

               ‘The elm trees are all dying.’

และ ว่า “เมื่อบางคน ‘dies’ อันเป็นผลจากการ เจ็บป่วย/บาดเจ็บ”

      อาจตามด้วย บุพบท “of” เช่น “die of disease/injuries.’

      หรือ “from” เช่น “die from it.” เช่น

               ‘An old woman dying of cancer was taken into hospital.’

              ‘Simon Martin died from brain injuries caused by blows to the head.’

ข้อควรระวัง:

ในการสร้างประโยค แนวนี้

         อย่าใช้ บุพบท อื่นใด นอกจาก “of” หรือ from” เช่น

ให้กล่าวว่า “บางคน ‘dies of’ hunger or thirst” หรือ

              “’dies of’ natural causes.”

อย่าใช้ว่า “die from” เช่น “Millions of children are dying of hunger.”


Dictionary of Problem Words and Expressions:

อธิบายว่า ตามปรกติ ในนัยยะว่า “to cease living” = (ยุติการมีชีวิต)

          เลือกที่จะใช้ “die” โดยตามด้วย บุพบท “of” เช่น

                ‘He died of (ไม่ใช้ from) a coronary attack.’

โดยที่ “die with” แสดงแนวคิด ที่ไม่เกี่ยวกับ “สาเหตุของการเสียชีวิต” เช่น

               ‘He died with courage.’


Merrium-webster Dictionary:

ให้คำจำกัดความ “die of” ว่าหมายถึง

             “to die because of (something)” เช่น

             ‘My uncle die of cancer.’

             ‘She died of old age.’

บางครั้ง มีการใช้เชิง Figuratively = (อุปมาอุปมัย=เปรียบเทียบ)

ในประโยคเช่น “They say that he died of a broken heart.”

       เพื่อให้หมายถึง “something causes a lot of discomfort/distress”

       = (บางสิ่งที่เป็นต้นเหตุให้เกิดความอึดอัด/กดดัน อย่างมาก) เช่น

                ‘I almost die of embarrassment.’

                ‘Would you like some water? You must be dying of thirst.’
