Bloom และ blossom
Dictionary.com สะกด คำอ่าน “blossom”
(เน้น พยางค์ แรก blos) ว่า “blos-uh m”

อธิบาย นาม ทั้ง “bloom” และ “blossom”
ต่างอ้างอิงถึง ดอก = flower ของพืช = plant ชนิดหนึ่ง
อาจกล่าวอย่างถูกต้อง ว่า
‘The cherry tree is in bloom’ หรือ
‘It is in blossom.’
และอาจใช้อีกอย่างได้ว่า
‘The cherry tree bloomed’ หรือ
‘It blossomed.’
เมื่อใช้ “figuratively (โดยปริยาย) นั่นคือ
ในนัย ที่ไม่เป็นตามอักษร (nonliteral sense)
การใช้ ทั้งสองคำ จะต่างกันเล็กน้อย
เช่น เมื่ออ้างอิงถึง “the bloom of youth” (ไม่อาจใช้ blossom)
หรืออาจเขียนอย่างเหมาะสม ว่า
“The slight youth blossomed into a sturdy athlete.”
มากกว่าจะใช้ว่า “He bloomed into one.”
เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยง ความสับสนเล็กน้อยนี้ ควรใช้ “flower” ปลอดภัยกว่า
