Able to
(DPWE) อธิบาย คำ “able to”
ว่าเป็น คำ “ฟุ่มเฟือย” (wordy) และ ไม่เป็น สำนวน (unidiomatic)
ที่นำมา แสดงแทน “can” หรือ “could” เช่น
“This work could not be finished in a month.”
ซึ่ง ควรเลือกใช้ มากกว่า ประโยค เช่น
“This work was not able to be finished in a month.”
ควร จำกัด การใช้ “able” แต่เพียงกับ (คน/สิ่งที่ มีความสามารถ)
“persons” หรือ “objects” ที่ “possess ability” เช่น
‘He was able in science.’
(CCED) อธิบาย การใช้ “be able to”
ในรูป “future” เพื่อ กล่าวถึง “ความสามารถ ที่มีในอนาคต” เช่น
‘I shall be able to answer that question tomorrow.’
บางครั้ง ใช้ “be able to”
ตามหลัง กริยาช่วย (modals) เช่น “might” หรือ “should”
และ ตามหลัง กริยา เช่น “want” “hope” หรือ “expect” เช่น
‘I might be able to help you.’
‘You may be able to get extra money.’
‘You should be able to see that from here,’
‘She would not be able to go out alone.’
‘Do you really expect to be able to do that?’
