การใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ ที่ถือว่าถูกต้องนี้ อ้างอิงตามมาตรฐานของภาษา

Via เป็น Preposition

Dictionary ส่วนใหญ่ ออกเสียง “VAI’uh” หรือ “vahy-uh” หรือ “ไว-อะ”

มีเพียงสามแห่ง คือ AHD และ SOED และ Harper Collins

ที่ให้ออกเสียงใน BrE ว่า “เวีย” (“vee uh”)

และทุก Dictionary รวมทั้ง “Wiktionary” อธิบายว่า สามารถใช้ให้หมายถึง

“by way of” หรือ “through” เช่น

‘We flew to Athens via Paris.’

‘Shipped to New York via the Panama Canal.’

“by means of” ด้วยการใช้ผ่าน “a medium” เช่น

‘I sent a message to Kitty via her sister.’

‘You can access our homepage via the internet.’

และ “as per” ใช้กับ สมการทางคณิตศาสตร์ (mathematical equation)

’Under the assumptions of Proposition 5 the entropies h(r) and H(k) are related via the following equation.’

(DPWE) อธิบาย การใช้ “VIA”

ว่า ใช้อย่างมากเกินควร ในความหมาย “by way of”

และบอกว่า “ไม่ควรใช้ ในความหมาย “by means of” ในคำกล่าวที่ไม่ถูกต้อง เช่น

“Aid was rendered the stricken country via food, clothing, and medicines.’

In Aus both pronunciations (vai-uh and vee-uh) are used and no one would think any differently.

NB. "viaduct" is a duct (or large pipe) or a bridge over a gap (valley, gully, ...) ;-)
