การใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ ที่ถือว่าถูกต้องในที่นี้ อ้างอิงตามมาตรฐานของภาษา
(MMC) อธิบาย ว่า
สามารถใช้ “THEN” ได้ สอง แนวทาง
คือ เป็น “Adv.” เช่น “I was still at school then.”
และ เป็น “Adj.” โดย นำหน้า นาม เท่านั้น เช่น
“The then prime minister, Harold Wilson.”
(AHD) อธิบาย การใช้ “Then”
เป็น “Adv.”
ในความหมาย “At that time” ว่าคือ “เฉพาะเวลานั้น ในอดีตหรืออนาคต”
‘I was still in school then.’ ‘Come at noon, I’ll be ready then.’
ในความหมาย “ต่อไป ในเวลา/พื้นที่ หรือลำดับ ทันทีหลังจาก”
‘Watched the late movie and then went to bed.’
ในความหมาย “เพิ่มเติม/ยิ่งกว่านั้น/นอกจากนั้น”
‘It cost $20, and then there’s the sale tax to pay.’
ใช้ตามหลัง “but” เพื่อ “เสริมหรือถ่วงดุล ข้อความก่อนหน้า”
‘The star was nervous, but then who isn’t on the first night of a new play.’
หมายถึง “in that case หรือ accordingly”
‘If traffic is heavy, then allow extra time.’
เมื่อเป็น “Adj.” ในความหมาย “ที่เป็นอยู่ ในเวลานั้น”
‘The then chairman of the board.’
หรือใช้เป็น “ตัวเชื่อม หรือขยาย ประโยค” (connector or modifier)
หมายถึง “และหลังจากนั้น”
‘I showered, then combed my hair.’
(AHD) ให้ ข้อสังเกต การใช้ “THEN”
ว่าบางครั้ง “พวกเข้มงวดการใช้ Grammar”
เน้นย้ำว่า “Then” ไม่เป็น “coordinating conjunction”
และอ้างว่า ประโยค “She took a slice of pie, then left” เป็นการใช้ที่ “ไม่ถูกต้อง”
ต้องเขียนใหม่ว่า “She took a slice of pie and then left.”
ที่ซึ่งใช้ “THEN” เป็น “Adv.”
และเชื่อมส่วนที่เป็น “compound predicate” ด้วย “and” ให้เป็น “coordinating conjunction”
แต่การใช้ “แบบที่ว่า ไม่ถูกต้องนั้น มีการใช้แพร่หลาย จนเป็นที่ยอมรับ”
(ตามผลการสำรวจในปี 2012 โดย AHD สอบถามกับ “Usage Panel” จำนวนมากกว่า สามในสี่)
มีข้อสังเกต อีกด้วยว่า “การใช้วรรคตอนของ ‘then’ แตกต่างกับการใช้ ‘and’”
โดยไม่ต้องมี ‘comma’ เมื่อเชื่อมด้วย ‘and’ = “She took a slice of pie and left.’
แต่เมื่อใช้ ‘then’ เชื่อม ตามปกติ ต้องมี ‘comma’ ด้วยเสมอ
มีเพียง ร้อยละ แปด ของ Panel ยอมรับให้ใช้ว่า “She took a slice of pie then left.”
(KEMD) ให้คำแปล Adv. ของ “THEN”
ว่า “ในขณะนั้น” เช่น ‘If you’re coming next week, I’ll see you then.’
ว่า “ช่วงนั้น” เช่น ‘I have been ill since then.’
ว่า “หลังจากนั้น” เช่น ‘I had a drink, (and) then I went home.’
ว่า “ถ้าอย่างนั้น” เช่น ‘He might not give us money and then what would we do?’
ว่า “นอกจากนี้” เช่น ‘I have two brothers, and then I have a cousin in America.’
ให้คำแปล เมื่อใช้เป็น ‘conjunction’
ว่า “ด้วยเหตุที่” เช่น ‘If you’re tired, then you must rest.’
ให้คำแปล เมื่อใช้ เป็น ‘Adj.’
ว่า “ในตอนนั้น” เช่น ‘The then Prime Minister.’

Wouldn't 'ตั้งแต่นั้นมา' describe this sense/meaning better?
