Tell กริยา และ กริยา Say
(OLD) อธิบาย การใช้ “TELL” และ “SAY”
ตามปกติ ใช้ กริยา “tell” โดยให้ บุคคลเป็น “กรรม” และบ่อยครั้ง มีกรรม สองคำ
‘Have you told him the news yet?’
บ่อยครั้ง ใช้ “tell” ร่วมกับ อนุประโยค “that”
‘Anne told me (that) she was tired.’
ปกติ ใช้ “Tell” “เมื่อบางคน ให้ข้อมูล หรือความจริง พร้อมกับใช้ “What” “Where” และอื่นๆ”
เช่น ‘Can you tell me when the movie starts?’
ยังสามารถใช้ “tell” เมื่อคุณสั่งหรือให้คำแนะนำแก่บางคน
‘The doctor told me to stay in bed.’
‘The doctor told me (that) I had to stay in bed.’ หรือ
‘The doctor said (that) I had to stay in bed.’
ต้องไม่ใช้ “Say” เมื่อมี “บุคคล” เป็น “กรรม”
“You say something” หรือ “Say something to somebody”
บ่อยครั้งใช้ “say” เมื่อคุณต้องการบอกบางคนด้วยคำที่แน่นอน
‘Sit down, she said.’
‘Anne said, I’m tired.
‘What did he say to you?’
ไม่อาจใช้ ว่า “Say about” ที่ถูกต้องมี บางสิ่งคั่น เช่น “say something about”
‘I want to say something/a few words/a little about my family.’
สามารถใช้ “say” ร่วมกับอนุประโยคหนึ่ง เมื่อมิได้มีการกล่าวถึง บุคคลที่คุณพูดด้วย
‘She didn’t say what she intended to do.’

รูป Past tense และ Past participle คือ “TOLD”
ถ้าบางคน “tells” บางสิ่งแก่คุณ หมายถึง “พวกเขาให้ข่าวสารแก่คุณ”
ปกติ “คุณจะอ้างอิงถึง ข่าวสารนี้” ด้วยการใช้ อนุประโยค “that” หรือ อนุประโยค “wh-“
‘Tell Dad the electrician has come.’
‘I told her what the doctor had said.’

เมื่อ direct object นั้น เป็น pronoun ปกติ คุณจะใส่ไว้ก่อน
คุณจะใส่ “to” ไว้หน้า indirect object.
‘I’ve never told this to anyone else in my whole life.’
เมื่อคุณ “อ้างอิงย้อนหลังไปถึง ข่าวสารที่ได้เคยกล่าวไว้ก่อนแล้ว”
ให้คุณใช้ “SO” ตามหลัง “TELL”
เช่น กล่าวว่า ‘I didn’t agree with him and I told him so’
‘She knows that I might be late. I have told him so.’
’Then how do you know she’s well?’ – ‘She told me so.’
เมื่อ บอกกับบางคน เกี่ยวกับ เรื่องเล่า เรื่องตลก หรือเรื่องโกหก ให้ใช้ “Tells”
‘She told me the story of her life.’
‘He’s extremely funny when he tells a joke.’
‘He told a lot of lies.
ถ้าบางคน มิได้พูดโกหก “คุณกล่าวว่า “พวกเขา “Telling the truth””
‘We knew that he was telling the truth.’
'I wondered why I hadn’t told Mary the truth.’
เมื่อคุณใช้ “tell” “เพื่อพูดถึง เรื่องเล่า เรื่องตลก หรือเรื่องโกหก”
สามารถใส่ indirect object ได้ทั้งนำหน้า หรือตามหลัง direct object.
‘His friend told me this story.’
‘Many hours had passed when Karen finished telling her story to Kim.’
ถ้าคุณ “tell” บางคน “to do” บางสิ่ง หมายถึง “คุณออกคำสั่งหรือสั่ง ให้เขาทำสิ่งนั้น”
เมื่อใช้ “tell” ในความหมายนี้ ต้องตามด้วย “object” และ infinitive “to”
‘Tell Martha to come to my office.’
‘They told us to put on our seat-belts.’
ข้อควรระวัง: อย่าใช้ “tell” ลักษณะนี้โดยไม่มี “object”
เช่น ไม่ใช้ว่า “They told to put on our seat-belts.”
ถ้าคุณ “can tell” ว่า “กำลังเกิดอะไรขึ้น หรือสิ่งใดเป็นความจริง”
หมายถึงว่า “คุณสามารถตัดสินได้ถูกต้อง ว่ากำลังเกิดอะไรขึ้นหรือสิ่งใดจริง”
‘I can usually tell when someone’s lying to me.’
‘I couldn’t tell what they were thinking.’
เมื่อใช้ “tell” ในความหมายนี้ ปกติต้องใช้ร่วมกับ “can” “could” หรือ ‘be able to’
Inform กริยา ออกเสียง “in-fawrm”
มีความหมายเหมือน “TELL” แต่ การใช้เป็นทางการมากกว่า และแตกต่าง
สามารถ “inform” บางคน “of” บางสิ่ง
หรือ “inform” บางคน “that” ว่า กำลังเกิดเรื่องบางอย่าง
‘The public is informed of the financial benefits that are available.’
‘It was his duty to inform the king that his country was in danger.’
บ่อยครั้ง ใช้อนุประโยค “That” ตามหลัง “INFORM”
‘I informed her that I was unwell.’
‘She informed me that she hadn’t change her plans.’
ในการสนทนา หรืองานเขียนที่เป็นทางการน้อยกว่า ควรใช้ “TELL” แทน
