I am confused by your explanation on "kith and kin". Looking up MacMillan dictionary (online): Kith comes from a word of Germanic origin meaning ‘known’. Kin is also of Germanic origin, from an Indo-European root meaning ‘give birth to’. Your kith are your friends or acquaintances, while your kin are all the people you are related to.

So both 'kith' and 'kin' are 'plural nouns' of Germanic origin. 'kith and kin' = 'friends and relatives'.

There is a more common meaning of 'knot' as in 'tie a/the knot' (= tie ropes or in slang 'marry'); 'gordian knot' (= difficult situation/problem); lover's knot (please look up the Net to see pictures);... and many ways to tie ropes togather: blood knot, dead knot, double knot, flat knot,...
