In มีความหมายพื้นฐานว่า อยู่ภายในพื้นที่หรือสถานที่หนึ่ง
The kids were playing in the street.
Into เป็นบุพบท ต่างจาก in ตรงที่ แสดงการเคลื่อนที่หรือทิศทาง to สถานที่ภายในแห่งหนึ่ง
The narrow road that led down into the village.
‘Mally was in the kitchen.’ และ ‘Mally walked into the kitchen.’
ถ้าออกเสียงเว้นระยะห่างจะเป็น คุณศัพท์
You may now go in to see the new baby.
การใช้ in เป็นเรื่องที่หลีกเลี่ยงได้ยาก จึงไม่ควรใช้บ่อยจนรู้สึกซ้ำซากน่าเบื่อ เช่นในวลี
‘have it in for’ = hold a grudge = รู้สึกไม่ชอบบางคน
‘in and out of’ = แขกประจำของบ้าน หรือเข้าคุกบ่อยๆ
