การทำให้ระบบอุดมศึกษาเป็น "ป่าแห่งปัญญา"

ความพึงพอใจของนักศึกษาต่อมหาวิทยาลัย
ผมชอบอ่านจดหมายเวียนจาก ผอ. พรทิพย์ กาญจนนิยต แห่งฟุลไบรท์     เพราะให้ไอเดียดีๆ เกี่ยวกับอุดมศึกษา     ผมต้องเรียนรู้เรื่องอุดมศึกษาอยู่เสมอ เพราะทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรมการสภามหาวิทยาลัยหลายแห่ง     ต้องหมั่นหาความรู้ไว้แนะนำให้มหาวิทยาลัยพัฒนาตนเอง    ต่อไปนี้เป็นเรื่องที่ให้ไอเดียต่อความพึงพอใจของนักศึกษาต่างชาติ     แต่ละมหาวิทยาลัยควรมีเป้าที่นักศึกษาตาม niche ของตน    และควรหมั่นทำความเข้าใจความต้องการ กลุ่ม นศ. ใน niche นั้น

Today I've got a news clipping, written by David Cohen in Chronicle of Higher Education, Oct 14. He highlights a recent survey funded by the British Council ka. 
Back in 2000, a previous survey, showed that that fewer than half of international students in Australia regarded the country as a destination preferred over Britain or the United States.
This survey acknowledged that Australia was regarded as being of lower quality in teaching and research than the UK or the US. International students in Australia viewed that Australia offered the third-highest standard of education, behind Britain and the United States but ahead of Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and other destinations.
However,  it is clear from the survey na ka that students' experiences in Australia have been positive for the most part. They felt safer and more welcome too na ka (This is obvious because the US. has imposed tighter immigration controls after 9/11 na ka). Australian institutions also provide support networks for most groups including Chinese, Muslim and African students, for example, Curtin university provides Halal food and a Mushala where our Muslim students can worship. From articles I've read, some American higher education institutions have been very serious but on average, they need to do more for diverse groups of international students.
Our higher education institutions don't really see surveys of this kind, especially to get to know the views of our neighboring countries na ka. If there were a national survey, it'd allow us to see a clearer picture of what we should do. Ajarn Pimpaporn from PSU's conducted a very small scale research to learn more about foreign students studying at Mahasarakham University. I recalled that it turned out to be quite positive though there was room for improvement in terms of support services. I think that was a real good start and if there's any like that, I'd encourage the info. sharing ka.

ผมคิดว่า สกอ. ควรส่งเสริมให้มีการ survey แบบนี้     โดยมีหลาย survey หลายเป้าหมาย     บาง survey เพื่อใช้ผลในการดึง นศ. ต่างชาติ    บาง survey เพื่อใช้ผลในการสร้าง niche ที่ต่างๆ กัน     ให้พ่อแม่รู้ว่าถ้าอยากให้ลูกของตนเรียนเพื่ออนาคตแบบไหน ควรให้เข้าเรียนในมหาวิทยาลัยใด     คือผมมองว่า survey กับการประชาสัมพันธ์ผล     จะช่วยทำให้เกิดความหลากหลายของสถาบันอุดมศึกษา     ทำให้แต่ละแห่งต้องสร้างจุดเด่นของตน และต้องเสริมจุเด่นเพื่อดึงนักศึกษาตาม niche ของตน     การบริหารระบบอุดมศึกษาให้เกิด diversification เป็นภารกิจสำคัญ ของ สกอ.    และต้องขับเคลื่อนความเป็นเลิศที่หลากหลาย     คือต้องหาทางให้สถาบันอุดมศึกษาแต่ละแห่งเลิศใน niche ของตน
