KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION: OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN PHYSICAL DYSFUNCTION CLIENTS

Hello every reader, back together again in seminar class with a new topic “OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN PHYSICAL DYSFUNCTION CLIENTS” by Dr. Anuchart Kaunnin who is our lecturer in physical field and told me about his experience. Today I would like to bring my knowledge and experience from listening to seminars to share them to all of you. I hope that everyone would not bore me.

 

What is the key mission of Occupational Therapy in Physical dysfunction?

In Physical occupational therapy, the occupational therapists must have the knowledge of the theories and frames of reference and must be selected to suit the individual patient. (Individualization) We must consider all context of the patient, such as physical activity, occupation, lifestyle issues, including cultural context.

 

How does the OT ensure Quality of intervention for Physical dysfunction client?

Firstly, occupational therapists have to evaluate to see real life activity of the patient and to set the goal intervention consistent with the patient's life. Should be working as a team with patients in the all treatment process. Furthermore, re – assessment is very important to see the progression and the performance of patients.

 

What are the strength, threats, and opportunity of Thai OT in Physical dysfunction?

Strengths - Occupational Therapy has used the knowledge from several sources. Both equipment and analysis activities can adapt to be used in the treatment by focusing on the real life activity.

Threats - we are working with a physical therapist that cause of ambiguous role between the two professions. For occupational therapy, we focus on purposeful activity that we should make clear the role, but we can share knowledge with each other.

Opportunities - we can see all kind of patients in physical field, so this is the great experience in our job.

 

What are the strategies of Occupational Therapy in Physical dysfunction?

The strategies of Occupational Therapy in Physical dysfunction field are considered to needs of clients, occupation; the activities that are meaningful to patients and the patient have been involved in the process of occupational therapy.

 

What have you learned about CMU-OT leading to build / create MU-OT?

Teaching of the two universities is similar. But we have to learn the cultural context of the patients. Then, be adapted and implemented to the individual patient, it will allow us to work anywhere. Also, we should break the routine intervention and the intervention should be based on patient-centered.

 

What do you want to see in the future?

Performance and context of the patient is more important than evaluating it as a number. It is the real life, the best outcome of patients. So we need to work with patient together and focus to real life occupation, quality of life skill, and client centered.

In the future, I want to see the Activity Analysis of Real life context & occupation to be choices of interventions.

 

AEC and Thai Occupational Therapy??

We need to communicate with other countries to work together. This is the great opportunity for us to go to work in a foreign country and learn the culture of other nations. Language is another important factor, so we need to develop ourselves to communicate and work with others.
