TEENAGE VIOLENCE

Problems, Causes, Solutions, Explanations

Recently, the headlines on the news usually feature news of random acts of street violence. These incidents are usually caused by young teenagers, as young as 13. It is hard not to draw the conclusion that these ‘teen violence’ had become endemic to New Zealand. There is a variety of factors causing the problem, and they will all have to be addressed to solve our main problem.

There are many problems with this: Random acts of violence on the streets, young teenagers being out late at night, possessing drugs and alcohols, assaults, drug trafficking. The main factors causing this are negligent parenting, alcohols, drugs, and poor surveillance. Negligent parenting in turn allowed teenagers to be out late at night, and indirectly allowed other factors to exist. Alcohols and drugs is almost a factor in all teenager-related problems these days, and they will continue to be so. Poor surveillance is what allowed them to be out late, fight, and buy drugs and alcohol.

Drugs and Alcohols are a main problem today for many things related to teenagers. Apart from causing violence in bars and streets, they also caused pregnancy, rape, accidents, etc. This is because they cause a negative effect to the body and mind, alcohol in particular erode our faculties and make us rowdy, violent, and bad at making decisions. Other drugs like marijuana and cocaine also cause problems like this, and may sometimes cause the user to die.

Poor surveillance also in part caused the problems of teenage violence and drug trafficking. Because if an area lack CCTV or police patrol, it would be a “dark spot”, allowing drugs dealer to sell drugs, and teenagers to attack people. This then sustained the other factors to the problems.

But the most important of all would be negligent parenting. Polices that have taken the teenagers home have reported that some of the parents seemed to not care much, and instead seemed annoyed that their children caused them inconvenience. It really comes to the family unit when we talk about solving the problems.

To stop drugs trafficking and teenagers having alcohols, one must first see the main reason why they are so easy to get: there is a high supply of it. The main way of coming to solve this problem would be to limit the source, so as that the young teenagers won’t be able to possess them easily. For alcohols higher taxes would be one way to solve the problem, but the shopkeepers would need to be vigilant as well to not sell alcoholic beverages to underage. Police would have to increase patrols to track down, ban, and remove drugs source and destroy drugs like marijuana and cocaine.

All crimes that caused the most damages are committed secretly. If police patrol were to be increased, if CCTV were to be increased, if citizens were to be vigilant, or if there were more lighting, criminals would be arrested and dealt with more easily. One way of doing this would be to supply funds to build more CCTV cameras, and getting shopkeepers to have a clearer view of the areas around their business place, and phoning the police immediately if a group of loiterers collect in an area. Lighting and soothing music would also do well to deter loiterers and dramatically decrease the chance of violence and crimes.

There are quite a few ways of solving the problems with negligent parents, and the bad news is: they’re all not very good at solving it, but they would be able to ease down the problem a little if they are done together. The main way, and the most emphasized, would be education and public awareness. We cannot fix a social problem secretly. It depends on the community at large. Laws and curfews should also be issued to enforce parents from neglecting their children.

To solve the teenager violence, one must first address the complex factors that influence, cause, and sustain it. With alcohols and drugs the teenagers are more likely to cause violence than not. With bad surveillance they would go unnoticed. With negligent parenting they would be able to do all of the above in the first place.
