“UKULELE” อ่านว่า “ยูกูลีลี่” ออกเสียงแบบอเมริกัน หรือ “อูคูเลเล่” ในภาษาฮาวาย แปลว่า หมัดกระโดด บางทีก็ย่อว่า Uke (เพราะในอังกฤษ เรียกว่า Ukelele) เป็น Lute ชนิดหนึ่ง อยู่ในตระกูลกีตาร์ แต่เสียงจะต่างจากกีตาร์ เพราะพัฒนามาจากลิวท์ (Lute) และใช้สายไนลอนสี่เส้นในการให้กำเนิดเสียง
The ukulele originated in the 19th century as a Hawaiian interpretation of a small guitar-like instrument brought to Hawaiʻi by Portuguese immigrants.[2] It gained great popularity elsewhere in the United States during the early 20th century, and from there spread internationally.
ต้นกำเนิด เกิดจาก ในศตวรรษที่ 19 ยุคล่าอาณานิคม ชาวโปรตุเกสได้นำเครื่องดนตรีประเภทลิวท์เข้ามา แล้วชาวพื้นเมืองฮาวายได้พยายามเลียนแบบแต่สร้างด้วยไม้ Koa ซึ่งมีอยู่แต่ในเกาะฮาวายเท่านั้น แล้วทำตัวให้มีขนาดเล็กว่าต้นฉบับ ต่อมา ได้รับความนิยมในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา

นั่นคือ ในทศวรรษ 1880 กำเนิดจาก Machete ซึ่งคล้ายกับ Cavaquinho และ Timple ครับ โดยชาวโปรตุเกศ-สเปน หรือที่เรียกว่า Macaronesian จะเรียกว่า ชาวมักกะโรนี ก็ได้กระมังครับ
