How to work happily and without stress (at Exxon Mobil)?

      On September 25, 2008, Exxon Mobil Limited Thailand invited Prof. Dr. Chira Hongladarom, Secretary-General of Foundation for International Human Resource Development to make a presentation on "How to work happily and without stress?" to 300 IT professionals. 

       According to his presentation, stress is a problem which is a part of human resource. Causes of Stress are from several aspects of Work like too much workload, work with Long Hours and routine and redundant work. 12.Other causes can be organizational management problems like conflicts, lack of teamwork, lack of freedom of work, organizational  and cross cultural conflicts (Thai and foreign), internal politics and others.

        The solutions are as follows.
(1) Know yourself , build energy for work from health, physical, mental preparation . Have freedom and work creatively.
   - Create work/life Balance
   - At home, spend time wisely on  music, gardening, taking care of children and watch sports. 
(2) Company like  Exxon Mobil may invite Consultants to organize Stress Management or brainstorming session involve insiders and outsiders to share idea.
(3) Study Organizational Change or design work which fits the environment.

1. Prepare your mind and body
2. Have passion for work
3. Have a purpose in work
4. Know the meaning of work
5. Have capability to make work successful.
6. Have learning opportunities from work.  
7. Gain knowledge from customers and colleagues
8.  Preparation before work
9.  Do what you can do best
10. Work as a team
11. Enjoy challenging work
12. Work with self-enrichment
        We should work because we love it and will do our best to leave it as legacy.
We will not be successful if we think it is just a Job.

I work based on the 12 rules and my happiness index is 9.5 out of 10.

  • Stress can be from work and work load. We can manage these causes.
  • How can you manage stress from organizational management?
  • The boss has to design appropriate work environment.
  • Create work to fit lifestyles, design work team well and manage organizational culture.

How can the boss help the subordinates reach full potential to work?

The boss can help the subordinates reach full potential by

  • assigning challenging jobs
  • being a good leader to motivate the subordinates to maiximize their potentials

 

  • Work environment for each person is not the same.
  • People may have life balance. Company has flexibility to manage work/life balance. I have room to improve this area.
  • Stress can be solved by yourselves, boss and organizational improvement.
  • Workload can be relieved by work smart and work in team.

I have workload and srtress. How can I reduce it?

 

  • The bosses may see your potentials so they assign you more workload.
  • Do not avoid it but manage it.
  • More works mean more experience.
  • Leave work to exercise and you can deal with work load.

To work happily, I can think of working in the middle of the road (Buddhism known as มัชฌิมาปฏิปทา)

And if you really don't like your job, the easy answer is "Quit".

Some talent employees need talent leaders to help coaching, guiding, pushing and be their role model.

To share idea on No.8 question,

I have workload and stress. How can I reduce it?,

I think you might need to understand "Time Management", do what is urgent and most important first.

And the must you should do is learning the way to say "NO" when someone gives you things (that is not urgent nor important).

I've question..

I'm a person who.. enjoy stress work

when it comes to hard work, yes, I'm stressed.

But somehow, i enjoy that feeling so much.(like some kind of addiction)

So, the question is.. am i psychoman?........
