มวล มาจากไหน (inside)
This post is very much an expanded version of a post มวล มาจากไหน <25 ส.ค. 2013>
It came up during the course of self-study on "road litters" (rubbish on roads and public places). Rubbish and litter have slight subtle different meanings in English (rubbish is more or less (to)'discard' something deemed useless; litter is about (to)'discard' in improper manners or places). In Thai, we'd say (ทิ้ง)(เศษ)ขยะ(ตามถนน)(ไม่เป็นที่เป็นทาง). I then lost track on my train of thoughts and wondered where the words come from (นิรุกติศาสตร์/etymology). And a result was the post above.
Let's walk through that track again slowly so we have more time to see things.
First, the word ขยะ :
ขยะ [ขะหฺยะ] น. หยากเยื่อ, มูลฝอย, ใช้ว่า กระหยะ ก็มี. [(RID) th-th 2542]
is also a word in Pali and Sanskrit
khaya: (ขยะ/คะยะ) waste; destruction; decay; consummation of. (m.) [Pali-English Dictionary, TW Rhys Davids, William Stede,... abbreviated as (PED)].
(RID) gives มูลฝอย as a meaning of ขยะ. The word มูลฝอย seems an odd combination.
มูล is a word in Pali as stated in (RID) and (PED):
มูล [มูน, มูนละ-] น. โคน เช่น รุกขมูล; ราก, รากเหง้า, เช่น มีโทสะเป็นมูล, เค้า เช่น คดีมีมูล, ต้น เช่น ชั้นมูล. ( ป. มูล; ส. มูลฺย).
[มูน, มูนละ-]
ว. มวล, ทั้งหมด, ทั้งสิ้น, เช่น จัดข้าวของไว้ให้โดยพร้อมมูล เตรียมเอกสารหลักฐานไว้ให้พร้อมมูล. ( ป. มูล; ส. มูลฺย).
[มูน] น. อุจจาระสัตว์, ขี้หรือเศษของสิ่งต่าง ๆ เช่น มูลไถ = ขี้ไถ.
[มูน] น. ดาวฤกษ์ที่ ๑๙ มี ๙ ดวง เห็นเป็นรูปสะดือนาค, ดาวช้างน้อย หรือ ดาวแมว ก็เรียก.
mūla: root; money; cash; foot; bottom; origin; cause; foundation; beginning. (nt.)
[but ฝอย only appears in (RID) as
ฝอย: น. สิ่งที่เป็นเส้นเล็ก ๆ ละเอียด เช่น ฝอยขัดหม้อ, หรือสิ่งที่มีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงเช่นนั้น เช่น ยาฝอย ฉีดน้ำเป็นฝอย; คําอธิบายวิธีใช้ยาหรือเวทมนตร์ต่าง ๆ; โดยปริยายหมายความว่าข้อความที่ไม่ใช่เนื้อหา. (ปาก) ก. พูดมากและเกินความจริง.]
Because one meaning "ว. มวล, ทั้งหมด, ทั้งสิ้น" is given for มูล and it is common in English to use 'adjectives' or วิเศษณ์ (ว.) as noun (น.). I ask if the word มวล also a Pali word. I first looked up (RID):
มวล [มวน] ว. ทั้งหมด, ทั้งสิ้น, ทั้งปวง, เช่น มวลชน มวลมนุษย์, ทั้งมวล ก็ว่า.
มวลสาร: น. เนื้อของเทหวัตถุที่รวมกันอยู่ในเทหวัตถุนั้น ๆ.
[เทหวัตถุ: [เทหะ-] (วิทยา) น. ก้อนหรือชิ้นหรือส่วนหนึ่งของสสาร อาจเป็นของแข็ง ของเหลว หรือแก๊ส ก็ได้. (อ. body).
เทห-, เทห์, เท่ห์: [เทหะ-] น. ตัว. (ป., ส. เทห ว่า ร่างกาย).

Then I looked for มวล in (PED) using various forms (such as mavala, m*v*la, ...) and did not find any "direct" transcription (letter-by-letter). So I tried 'semantic' search (by meaning) and found some interesting data (ข้อมูล):
ประมวล [ปฺระมวน] ก. รวบรวมให้เข้าระเบียบเป็นหมวดหมู่, โบราณเขียนเป็น "ประมวญ" ก็มี. น. หนังสือที่รวบรวมสิ่งซึ่งเป็นประเภทเดียวกัน เช่น ประมวลกฎหมาย ประมวลภาพ.
ประมวญ [ปฺระมวน] (โบ) ก. ประมวล. (RID)
ดุล, ดุล-: [ดุน, ดุนละ-] น. ตราชู, คันชั่ง, มาตราชั่งน้ำหนักโบราณ เช่น ทองคําหนัก ๒๐ ชั่ง เรียกว่า ดุลหนึ่ง; ความเท่ากัน, ความเสมอกัน, เช่น รายรับรายจ่ายเท่ากัน เรียกว่า งบประมาณสู่ดุล; ชื่อกลุ่มดาวรูปคันชั่ง เรียกว่า ราศีดุล เป็นราศีที่ ๖ ในจักรราศี, ราศีตุล ก็ว่า. ว. เท่ากัน, เสมอกัน, ทัดเทียมกัน. tulā: a balance; scale; a rafter. (f.) (PED)
<NB. a balance/a scale : a weighing equipment; a rafter is likely to mean 'a float' and implicitly relating floating characteristics of object to (concept of) 'mass'.
vāla: hair of the tail. (adj.), fierce; malicious. (m.)
สสาร [สะสาน, -สานระ-] น. สิ่งที่มีมวลสาร ต้องการที่อยู่ และสัมผัสได้ อาจมีเพียงสารเดียว เช่น ทองคำ เงิน แก้ว เกลือ น้ำ หรือประกอบด้วยสารหลายสาร เช่น ดินปืน อากาศ ก็ได้.
วัตถุ น. สิ่งของ. ( ป. ; ส. วสฺตุ).
วัตถุ น. มาจากบาลี วตฺถุ, จากสันสกฤต วสฺตุ สิ่งของ; สิ่งที่เป็นชิ้นเป็นอัน. n. thing; substance. พื้นที่; พื้นดิน; สถานที่. n. site; ground; place. เรื่อง; เรื่องราว; n. story. มูลฐาน; รากฐาน; สิ่ง n. foundation; basis. <From PTE-BuddhistDict>
khandha: 1. bulk; 2. the trunk of the body or of a tree; 3. mass; heap; 4. a section or chapter; 5. sensorial aggregates which condition the appearance of life in any form. (m.) (PED).
But nothing points to the etymology of มวล from Pali or Sanskrit. So I looked into the possibilities of มวล coming from Khmer or Mon languages. (Both are heavily influenced by Pali and Sanskrit too -- as they were historically Buddhist kingdoms.)
I compiled Thai words ending with "-วล" : กะนวล กังวล นวล กำสรวล กระสรวล
เสสรวล สรวลเส กรเวนกรวล แสงสรวล (สมุทรโฆษ) กระอวล (กลอน), อวล มวล ไกวัล (ป., ส. เกวล) kevala: lonely; unmixed; whole; entire. (adj.); expression of the concept of unity and totality: only, alone; whole, complete; (adv) altogether or only (PED),...
and looked up (RID) for meanings.
This word
อวล [อวน] ก. ฟุ้งด้วยกลิ่นหอม, มักใช้เข้าคู่กับคำ อบ เป็น อบอวล. (ข. ว่า เต็ม, แน่น, อึดอัด).
caught my imagination because its meaning in Khmer when combined with a common way people say "1 ១
មួយ" (มวย) as มึ -- when combined with อวล we have มึ+อวล or quickly มวล. In meaning มึ+อวล means 'one full/whole" which is a concept of 'mass'.
So, that was my theory. BUT I am not a linguist, I don't know enough Khmer language and I still want to find evidence of this 'sandhi' (สนธิ).
Recently I have been informed that มวล is a native Thai word as well as words like ขวัญ. The use of the word ขวัญ is explained but not its etymology. I am not comfortable with the idea of proof by 'proxy' (with clauses like
คำว่า "มวล" ไม่ได้มาจากคำบาลีสันสกฤตหรือคำในภาษาอื่น ถือว่าเป็นคำไทยแท้ (เช่นเดียวกับคำว่า "ขวัญ") and an article on the word including this "... คำว่า ขวัญ เป็น คำไทยแท้ มีอยู่ในภาษาไทยของคนไทยทุกถิ่น. ที่เขียนใช้ ญ สะกด เพราะเข้าใจผิดว่าเป็นคำยืมมาจากภาษาเขมร แท้จริง คำว่า ขวัญ แม้ว่าจะสะกดด้วยตัว ญ ก็เป็นคำไทยแท้." I am yet to convince that คำว่า "มวล" ไม่ได้มาจากคำบาลีสันสกฤตหรือคำในภาษาอื่น ถือว่าเป็นคำไทยแท้. I would prefer to have a more rigorous proof like "มูล" comes from Pali because we have "muula" in the Tipitaka:
The first sutta in MN is the Muulapariyaaya Sutta, The Discourse on the root of Existence.
"I will teach you, bhikkhus, the exposition of the root of all things (sabbadhammamuulapariyaaya). '

Thank you KRUDALA and โอ๋-อโณ : I have hope that someone 'out there' may give me more clues or a right direction for both the etymology of มวล and how to fix the problems of 'road litter'. (The current prime minister of Thailand had shown his preference to burn litter to generate electricity to supply the power grid authority at a fixed and profitable price by law. Will this also solve 'road litter' problems? We should ask ...)
