Dear All,
Earlier I was provided a copy of the published article [V.P. Dia et al
(2005).Comparative Physicochemical characteristics of Virgin Coconut
OIl Produced by different methods, Philippine Agricultural Scientist:
Vol 88 (4),462-475]by one of the authors, Professor/Dr Evelyn Mae T.
Mendoza, University of the Philippines-Los Banos.
The study confirmed the earlier statement and findings in the
Philippines of the late Dr Julian Banzon, Emeritus Professor of
Coconut Oil Chemisrty, Univ. of the Philippines, that the vitamin E
(alpha tocopherol) is only present in the testa of the nut (thin
brownish material found between the whitish coconut meat/endosperm/
kernel and the internal side of the nut shell. Dia and his co-workers
(2005) found a mean value of 732 microgram/gram (ppm) vitamin E in the
coconut testa. There are several implication of this milestone
findings which I rather be silent meantime.
Cheers,
Sev Magat
It is helpful to relate the tocopherol (anti-oxidant) content to the
good news for the coconut farmers.
