Plain and Simple English Talks (5)

Learning by (copying) Patterns

"Pattern" is a common 'form' or a common 'shape' we usually copy to do something. 'Wheel' is a pattern we use as a main part to move something big or heavy. 'wing' is a pattern we use for flying. "rice paddock" is another pattern we use to control water to grow rice. There are many patterns we copy and use for this and that and so on.

[We note that 'patterns' are 'natural property' or 'cultural property' and not 'copyright'-able. We may copy and modify any pattern for our use in whichever way we choose. But there are designs, methods and products that are 'patented' in some countries and are illegal to copy or use without agreement from the patent-holder. We use only 'open and free' patterns.]

A simple way to learn (English) is to copy patterns of words to say something to other people. It is the same way that children learn a language. Children repeat words they have heard back many times over. Sometimes, children repeat words they may not know the meanings. They say words to people and they listen to words people say back. They soon know those words. This is the way of Plain and Simple English.

Some words are used quite often. We can use these words to say a lot about the world we live in. It is a good idea to learn these words. So, we can talk (Plain and Simple English - PSE).

Some (pronoun) words we use instead of 'names':
it I you he they we she who
them me him one her us
something nothing anything everything
someone everyone anyone
themselves himself itself myself

Some (verb) words we use to say what we are/do/have:
be* have* do*
say get make work try
come go know take give leave
see think look want feel
use find tell ask call

Some (preposition) words we use to say more about what we do:
of in to for with on at from by about as
into like through after over between out against
during without before under around among

We can take 1 word from [noun], 1 word from [verb] to say a lot of things.
We can take 1 word from [noun], 1 word from [verb] and 1 word from [preposition] to say more things.

For now let us note the patterns {[pronoun] [verb]} and {[pronoun] [verb] [preposition]}.

PSE Drill 1.a:
Please say things using those patterns and words from the lists.

PSE Drill 1.b:
Let us try to say these words aloud as clearly as we can.

bay, day, gay, hay, jay, lay, may, nay, pay, ray, say, way

Now let our friends say them aloud and we listen as carefully as we can.
