8. Suicide prevention

 

Research and experiences from Thailand:

Research methodology: to analyze the national burden of suicide in recent years in terms of the differences among gender, region, marital status, occupation as well as in die and self harms; the explore the causes of suicide in Thailand by analyzing the main complaints in psychiatric hospital, mobility of diseases, mental status and human relationship; to identify the methods of suicide and the reasons for surviving; to explore the successful intervention of different level;

 

Worldwide Suicide rate:

•Every year, almost one million people die from suicide; a "global" mortality rate of 16 per 100,000, or one death every 40 seconds.

•Apart from suicide attempts, suicide rates in the last 45 years have increased by 60% worldwide. Suicide is among the three leading causes of death among those aged 15-44 years in some countries, and the second leading cause of death in the 10-24 years age group.

The causes of suicide:

•Suicide is complex with psychological, social, biological, cultural and environmental factors involved. The major risk factors are mental disorders (particularly depression and alcohol use disorders) and impulsiveness.

 

Effective interventions

•restriction of access to common methods of suicide;

•multi-sectoral approaches involving many levels of intervention and activities;

•adequate prevention and treatment of depression and alcohol and substance abuse;

•follow-up contact with those who have attempted suicide

 

Current challenges

•lack of public awareness of suicide prevention

•Reliability of suicide certification and reporting

•deficiency of an innovative, comprehensive multi-sectoral approaches
