                                                                  The Titanic

“The Titanic” is about the famous ocean liner which sank on her first voyage.

In April of 1912, the largest, swiftest, most luxurious ocean liner set out on her first voyage. The Titanic had everything – plush cabins, a heated swimming pool, a gymnasium, and a hospital. But what the luxurious ocean liner did not have been enough lifeboats. She moved cross the Atlantic at record-breaking speed. As she moved in to the area called The Grand Banks, the Titanic received reports that icebergs were drifting in the area. At least five ships had radioed the liner that icebergs lay in her path. The Titanic ignored all warnings and moved on in to the night at full speed. Suddenly the ship’s lookout reported an iceberg straight ahead. The ship’s bow was able to move past the iceberg, but a large, 300-foot incision was cut into the ship’s hull below the waterline. The blow was fat. Calls for help were sent out to all ships in the area. All but one ship was too far away to reach the liner in time. The Titanic had 2,224 on board, but only twenty lifeboats. A total of 1,513 were killed in the icy seas. It was the greatest disaster in the history of commercial navigation.

                                                               Riding in a Balloon

Riding in a hot-air balloon is a real adventure. It is a lot of fun to float high in the sky. The wind can take you anywhere. But riding in a balloon is also dangerous. Every time the balloonist takes off, every part of the balloon must be checked. This is always done carefully. First the balloon is spread out on the ground. Then it is checked carefully for holes and leaks. Next the basket is checked and placed in the right position. After this, the burner is checked and placed in position. This, also, is done carefully. A balloon is light enough to float only when filled with the hot air. It is the burner that warms the air. The hotter the burner warms the air, the lighter the balloon will be. And the lighter the balloon is, the higher it will go. If the burner is not working in the right way, it could be very dangerous for the balloonist.

                                Amy Van Dyken

Amy Van Dyken was born in Englewood, Colorado, in 1973. She was a sick child. The doctors told her parents that Amy had asthma. People with asthma sometimes can’t breathe. She went to the hospital many times when she was young. She couldn’t do the things other children could do. Then she started to swim and liked it. When she swam, she could be like all the other children. In the beginning, she was slow. When there was a race, she was always the last. It was very hard for her, but she swam faster and faster. When she was 13, she started to win races.

Amy Van Dyken graduated from high school in 1991. She was a good swimmer, so many colleges wanted to give her swimming scholarships. She went to Colorado State University.

In 1994, Amy was College Swimmer of the Year. In the fall of 1994, Amy decided to leave college early. She wanted to train for the 1996 Olympics full time. She swam five to six hours a day. During this time, Amy continued her asthma medicine. With all her training, she can still take in only 60% as much air as people without asthma.

When the Olympics arrived in 1996, Amy was ready. She entered five events. She won four gold medals. She was the first American woman to win four gold medals in one Olympics.

In 1998, Amy injured her shoulder when she was training.  She won one race in 1999, but injured her shoulder again. In 2000, Amy entered the Olympic again. She had a bad shoulder so she did not do as well as in the 1996 Olympics. This time she won two gold medals.
