The Four Noble Truths of Sufferings
Inspired by very nice discussion about Buddhism on this thread. As Thai
people are known throughout the world as Buddhist ( hehe I has been studied
Buddhism as a school subject till high school ). So!! I have decided to
expand my understanding in อริยสัจจ์ ( Ariyasacca) or the Four Noble to be rough
information for everyone here…
อริยสัจจ์ ( Ariyasacca) or the Four Noble Truths of Sufferings is the central theme
of Buddhism, which is the summarized wisdom outline of " ปฏิจจสมุปบาท (Paticca
Samuppada)",the 12 causes of existence, a concatenation of cause and effect
in the whole range of existence or the chain of causation and phenomenal
cause and effect.
The Buddha outlines the Dharma – the Four Noble Truths set forth in his first sermon at Deer Park as the followings;
1) ทุกข์ (Dukkha ) :The Noble Truth of Dhukka
There is suffering and pain which is an intrinsic part of life and universal.
In essence, Dhukka is suffering or unsatisfactoriness which is caused by the
five grasping Aggregates ("ขันธ์ 5 / khun ha" in Thai ).These five
characteristics of self-awareness are;
- รูป ( roopa) Physical form which has given rise to the body
- เวทะนา (wetanaa) Feelings and sensations
- สัญญา ( sanyaa) Perception
- สังขาร ( sangkaanra) Mental formations, thoughts and imagination
- วิญญาณ (winyaana) Conciousness.
2) สมุทัย ( Samudaya ) :The Noble Truth of the Origin of Dhukka
There is a cause of suffering and pain, which is attachment or desire
(tanha).
Tunha is the thirst for manifestation and life that is experienced by the
unreincarnated soul
,which is the cause of suffering : a constant dissatisfaction, frustration.
Attachment of all kinds, to persons, to life, material comfort, pleasant
sensations, to unpleasant sensations too. There is also attachment to
beliefs, thoughts, ideas/ideologies.
The main three kinds of tanha given as the chief causes are:
- กามตัณหา (Kamatanha) Sensual craving , craving for sensual pleasures.
- ภวตัณหา (Bhavatanha) craving for existence and sensual pleasures connected
with the view of eternalism.
- วิภวตัณหา (Vibhavatanha) craving for self annihilation.
3) นิโรธ ( Nirodha) : The Noble Truth of the Cessation of Dhukka
There is a way out of suffering to eliminate attachment and desire as the
source of greed is illusion (maya). By destruction of ;
- อุปาทาน (Upadana) attachment
- ตัณหา (Tunha) craving
- อวิชชา (avidya) nescience, ignorance and lack of true perception.
4) มรรค (Magga) :The Noble Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of
Dhukka.
There's a path leading to cessation of Dhukka, by following the Eightfold
Path leads to the cessation of pain, greed, and illusion which can be
summarized as:
- สัมมาทิฎฐิ (Sammadinnhi) Right View
- สัมมาสังกัปปะ (Sammasaikappa) Right Intention and Mental Attitude
- สัมมาวาจา ( Sammavaca ) Right Speech
- สัมมากัมมันตะ ( Sammakammanta) Right Action
- สัมมาอาชีวะ (Sammaajava) Right Livelihood
- สัมมาวายามะ ( Sammavayama ) Right Effort
- สัมมาสติ (Sammasati) Right Mindfulness and Attentiveness
- สัมมาสมาธิ (Sammasamadhi) Right Concentration
PS.
-The Buddha declares it is possible for all to gain Nibbana through practice
of the Dharma. This is gained through direct knowledge.
-If anything on my posting is defective -- in terms of the English expression
or the Pali -- I hope that knowledgeable people will forgive me, for it's not
the case that I'm expert in a wide range of matters.
