It is important for the student to realise that there is no one general body of sociological understanding uncritically accepted by all. In fact what we have is a variety of theoretical perspectives which are simply different ways of perceiving and understanding the social world. Therefore the distinctive feature of sociology is not so much what is studied but how it is studied and explained.
Facts only present themselves as such in response to an individual’s attempt to understand and explain the world. For example the fact that a piece of wood is one metre long and not just a piece of wood derives not from the wood itself but from a ‘model’ or ‘theory’ of measurement invented by human beings – thus at the end of the day a ‘fact’ is essentially a product of theoretical interpretation and selection.
The different sociological perspectives generally tend to fall into two different categories:
-SOCIAL SYSTEMS – Macro Sociology
SOCIAL ACTION – Micro Sociology
