The International Organization for Migrants (IOM)
project has been implemented in Tak province since 2003 with
the objectives of providing health education upon major
communicable diseases prevention to migrants and increasing
their access to health services. This study aims to assess the
knowledge, attitude, and practice of migrants upon major
communicable diseases prevention and their access to health
services pre and post the implementation of IOM project. The
data were collected in 2003 and in 2006 from 816 migrants who
were living in Tak province by using structured questionnaires.
Percentage, standard deviation, Chi-Square test, Fisher’s exact
test, and Mann-Whitney U test have been employed to analyze
both pre and post data.
The finding reveals that IOM project helped improve knowledge, attitude, and practice of migrants concerning major communicable diseases prevention, and thus contributing to an increase in their access to health services. As the percentage of migrants accessed to women and children health was not different, the future IOM project needs to address optimal methods to tackle this challenge.
Key words: Migrants, Health services accessibility, Boarder health
