หมอรักษาโรค – โปรดเข้าใจ คำว่า รักษา (ไม่ใช่ ซ่อม เยียวยา )

Yesterday, I saw my doctor (about getting a routine yearly 'pathology test') who is leaving the clinic for the Wild West (of Australia). We chatted a little bit in a parting (goodbye) ritual. What he said followed me home and now rendered in this post.

He [my doctor] has been working day in day out in this clinic from 2013 CE. His life just goes about and around patients and healthcare providers. This has become a routine job like any other job in any factory, office, shop, school, and so on. Patients come to see a doctor and expect the doctor to treat and correct all conditions that the patients themselves have been accumulating for many many years. Doctors are medical practitioners they are trained to recognize (diagnose) abnormal or ill conditions and associate causes. sometimes, unbalances can be rectified simply and quickly by pharmaceutical drugs or surgeries or changes in patients' behavioural patterns. Most of the times, patients need to be the main actors in the treatment not just minor participants. They are the main stake holder, the most to gain and lose, the real prime target or the real win.

Doctors come to work and go home at the end of business hours. Patients live with the conditions 24x7 for life. If they don't commit to good health (and wellbeing and happiness and ...) and work for what they wish for. Doctors cannot just point a wand and grant their wishes every time they pop in to see their doctor. No. No. No. (Say No 3 times).

In Thai we have heard the saying 'หมอไม่ใช่ เทวดา'. And a little search would tell us that we have 'wrong perception' of "แพทย์ : ผู้รักษาโรค, หมอรักษาโรค" (just like patients in AUS).

หมอ     expert, skillful/experienced person/operator/worker,

รักษา [Royal Institute Dictionary (2542 Th-Th)] : guard, preserve, protect, care/take care of
ก. ระวัง เช่น รักษาสุขภาพ, ดูแล เช่น รักษาทรัพย์สมบัติ, ป้องกัน เช่น รักษาบ้านเมือง, สงวนไว้ เช่น รักษาความสะอาด รักษาไมตรี; เยียวยา เช่น รักษาคนไข้. ( ส. ; ป. รกฺข).

เยียวยา [Royal Institute Dictionary (2542 Th-Th)] :treat, cure, make well again, solve, fix, repair

ก. บำบัดโรค, แก้โรค, เช่น ไม่มีหมอจะมาเยียวยาได้; แก้ไข, ทำให้ดีขึ้น, เช่น เศรษฐกิจกำลังทรุดหนัก ยากที่จะเยียวยาได้.

แก้

ซ่อม [Royal Institute Dictionary (2542 Th-Th)] 
ก. ทำสิ่งที่ชำรุดให้คืนดี; แทง. **we will have to ask The Royal Society what this แทง. means**
น. เรียกช้างสำหรับใช้ฆ่าคนว่า ช้างซ่อม เช่น ช้างพลายซ่อมตัวหนึ่ง เป็นช้างเพชฌฆาต. (พงศ. เลขา).

It should be cleared now that doctors are mainly "guarding" against dis-eases or ill conditions not repairers in the sense of motors mechanics fixing broken cars. Motor mechanics too would love to help you prevent cars broken down with proper and scheduled maintenance --to keep cars running well and avoid major fixes.

So, to you all! Keeping your health is your responsibility and duty with full commitment. Doctors will help you maintain your health but they cannot and do not like "fixing" you.
