The Devil in Detail

We have looked at some big issues in the Royal Society Thai Dictionary mobile edition {RSTDm}. Some of us may have already thought that we ought to have these issues removed. That is RSTD should be revised. I have the same opinion and have written to the Royal Society requesting a revision. I have listed several issues to provide justification and support for the revision. (The request will be posted for public scrutiny soon.)

But let us look at some details in RSTD that we can help to improve. I mean ‘we’, as in the public, Thai language teachers and educational institutions, can help. By installing RSTDm on our phones and using or reading RSTDm, making notes of what seem odd or out of place, then sending these notes to the Royal Society (Please add a keyword “RSTD Issues for Revision” to the (e)mail subject so that our notes can be bundled together and easy for the Royal Society to work on. (Please do this quickly so we can have the revised edition sooner.) You can write to the Secretary of Royal Society (contact address is on royin.go.th) and/or ask questions on the royin.go.th webboard, too.

I give some examples in my request (to the Royal Society for a RSTD revision). Here they are:

ปรัสสบท
[ปะรัดสะบด] น. “บทเพื่อผู้อื่น”, ในตำราไวยากรณ์บาลีและสันสกฤตใช้เป็นเครื่องหมายให้ทราบว่าเป็นกริยากัตตุวาจก เช่น สูโท โอทนํ ปจติ = พ่อครัวหุงอยู่ซึ่งข้าวสุก ปจติ เป็นกริยาปรัสสบท, ตรงข้ามกับ อัตตโนบท.
(A cook/boiled rice [to be served]/cooks = a cook cooks boiled rice for guests.)

อัตตโนบท
น. “บทเพื่อตน”, ในตำราไวยากรณ์บาลีและสันสกฤตใช้เป็นเครื่องหมายให้ทราบว่า เป็นกริยากรรมวาจกหรือภาววาจก เช่น สูเทน โอทโน ปจิยเต = ข้าวสุกอันพ่อครัวหุงอยู่, ปจิยเต เป็นกริยาอัตตโนบท, ตรงข้ามกับ ปรัสสบท.
(by a cook/boiled-rice/cooks for one's own use = a cook cooks boiled-rice for himself.)

(g)
สุกร [สุกอน] น. หมู (มักใช้เป็นทางการ) เช่น เนื้อสุกร สุกรชำแหละ. (ป.; ส. ศูกร, สูกร).

*mynote* This issue here is whether 'correct pronunciation' should be included in the definition to improve language understanding. Other examples (words from Pali) : วิธิ วิธี, อิตถิ อิตถี, เวทิ เวที, วีถิ วิถี (in Thai), ชิลเดอร์ และมอร์เนียร์ วิลเลียม Childers and Mornier-Williams (see issue 7(b)).

(h)
The RSTD reading guide should be easier accessible (from a menu or on the search result display page) so that pronunciation and references can be resolved quickly. As it is the whole reading guide is only accessible and readible after some manipulation outside the search subsystem. It would also be useful to allow searching for words within the result page and having secondary search results display with the primary search or with the previous results easiy re-accessible.
[Though this is a personal preference issue, it deserves more attentions. RSTD will be used more and hence more correct Thai language usage if it is easier to use.]

It is our Thai dictionary. The Royal Society is, by law, resiponsible for maintaining and revising it. But we can input into the process to improve our Thai dictionary. Please consider making contribution for the sake of Thai language and our children.
