ปี ค.ศ.1747 James Lind ทดลองแบ่ง กลาสีเรือ 12 คน
ที่ป่วยโรค Scurvy ออกเป็น 6 กลุ่ม
(6-armed controled trial) กลุ่มละ 2 คน

(1) ให้กิน ส้มและมะนาว

(2) ให้กิน น้ำไซเดอร์ (Cider)

(3) ให้กิน Elixir of vitriol (Aromatic sulfuric acid)

(4) ให้กิน น้ำส้มสายชู (Vinegar)

(5) ให้กิน น้ำทะเล (Sea water)

(6) ให้กิน ลูกจันทร์เทศ เครื่องเทศ ใช้ปรุงรสอาหาร (Nutmeg)

โดยอาหารอื่นและที่อยู่ที่พัก จัดให้เป็นแบบเดียวกัน

อีก 200 ปี ต่อมา ค.ศ.1982 นักวิทยาศาสตร์ จึงค้นพบวิตามินซี

การทดสอบทางสถิติ p < 0.05 ช่วยตอบว่า
associaton ไม่น่าเป็นเพราะ "ความบังเอิญ" (unlikely by chance)

stratified analysis ตรวจหา confounding ในขั้นตอนวิเคราะห์
