As I mentioned earlier that Thai and Bangla languages have some similarities.
Today, I found one more similarity. <<Songkran in Thai and Songkranti in Bangla>>
In Bangla language “Songkranti” denotes the last day of every month in the Bangla calendar year.
It means the transition of the sun, and of the planets, from one into another of the 12 zodiac constellations.
From time immemorial it has been an event of festivities of the common people, mainly rural, rather than of the royalty.
Celebrated on the 31st day of Chaitra, “Chaitra Songkranti” on the last day of the Bangla calendar year, village fairs, rural plays (known as jatras) and entertaining each other with “pithas” (mainly rice-cakes) brought in some measure of softness to the otherwise hard life of the common man.
“Chaitra-Songkranti” is now gradually making its entry into the urban life also alongwith “Pohela Boishakh”, the first day of the months of Boishakh (the Bangla New Year’s Day).
