Network Outage

Our main mobile tower (up on a mountain) suffered severe technical issue and another tower (more powerful) in town was being upgraded to provide 5G bands, so we have had no telecom services for a week. We can now appreciate a reality show TV series ‘Alone’ where contestants (both female and male) try to outstay the others in ‘wilderness’ without modern media networks (no newspapers, radio, TV, phone, Internet,…) and no modern tools or gadgets for survival. They have to survive, find foods and shelter, and take care of their health and hygiene with what they can find in the environment. In simple words -back to the wild-.

For me, I had to work in the old fashioned way, no gen AI to give an answer in a few minutes, it took more than 1 week! A time like exploring in childhood again ;-)

MJO and OLR ทำอากาศร้อน?

Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) : an eastward moving ‘pulse’ of cloud and rainfall near the equator that typically recurs every 30 to 60 days.

–The current MJO is moving in a circle (instead of eastward) over an equatorial region covering the (east of) Indian Ocean and the (west of) Pacific Ocean (see http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/mjo/ ).

Outgoing longwave radiation (OLR): a (natural) process of cooling/losing heat by radiation (without the need for ‘heat conductor’). Our Earth is heated up by ‘shortwave radiation’ (in visible near-infrared and ultraviolet lights; nm wavelength) which can go through clouds. But is cooling by radiating (invisble mostly infrared and far-infrared; 4-100 microns wavelength) ‘longwave’ radiation which is blocked and reflected by clouds back to Earth. This is commonly known as ‘the greenhouse effect’.

As we (human thru heat engines) heat up the Earth on top of what we receive from the sun, beyond our cooling system (OLR) capacity, and on top of that MJO is circling cloud covers over the region, we get extreme hot weather in places and extreme rain storms in places. Somewhat like ‘boiling’?

Golden Rice -a safe GM rice?

May Day and Mayday but SOS

The May Day that refers to the first of May has been in English for a very long time—back to the 1200s, in fact—but it’s not what inspired the call for help.

Mayday comes from french m’aider or m’aidez, shortened from venez m’aider ‘come and help me’.

Mayday is internationally accepted as distress signal in voice form (for its clear and short sound) .

Blue Holes on Earth

But it is actually deeper than that; the profiler they used was only capable of functioning at depths of 500 meters.

Blue holes are water-filled caverns that form below the seafloor. They are most often found in coastal areas where the bedrock is prone to erosion. They develop as ocean water seeps through cracks, dissolving minerals as they go, leading to sinkholes . Over time, they can grow quite large. Several blue holes have been found around the globe, such as the Great Blue Hole near Belize and the Dahab Blue Hole off the coast of Egypt. Up until now, the deepest known to exist was the Dragon Hole in the South China Sea, which has been measured to 301 meters.

Note Sinkholes are water-eroded caverns that form below ground surface. They are hidden until the [earth] domes collapse.

เราทุกคนทราบกันว่าคำว่า earn แปลว่า ได้รับ อาจจะได้รับเงิน ได้รับสิ่งของ หรืออะไรก็แล้วแต่ ซึ่งคำว่าได้รับ เราอาจใช้คำว่า get, receive หรือว่า gain ก็ได้ ทั้งหมดก็แปลว่าได้รับ แล้วทำไมต้องใช้คำว่า earn?

คำว่า earn มีความพิเศษกว่าคำอื่น ๆ ตรงที่ มีความหมายแฝงว่า ควรค่าที่จะได้รับ ไม่ใช่ว่าได้รับเพราะความบังเอิญ เช่น จับฉลาก โชคดีได้มาง่าย ๆ

แต่เป็นการได้รับจากความทุ่มเท ความเหนื่อยยาก เช่น ผู้รับได้ทำงาน หรือ ทำประโยชน์ จนได้ผลสำเร็จ ควรค่าที่จะได้ผลตอบแทนดังกล่าว

กลับมาที่พากย์เป็นภาษาไทย ให้ความหมายว่า

“เจมส์ อยู่ให้คุ้มนะ อยู่ให้คุ้ม”

คำสั้น ๆ แต่มีความหมายยิ่งใหญ่

น่าจดจำ และ นำไปใช้
