นิทานเรื่องหมากับเงา

หมาตัวหนึ่งกำลังคาบชิ้นเนื้อวิ่งข้ามสะพาน ขณะที่มันอยู่บนสะพานมันก็ก้มมองลงไปในน้ำและมันก็เห็นหมาตัวหนึ่งกำลังคาบเนื้อชิ้นใหญ่กว่า ด้วยความอยากได้ มันจึงอ้าปากเห่าเพื่อแย่งเอาเนื้อชิ้นนั้นมาเป็นของมัน แต่ทันทีที่มันอ้างปาก ชิ้นเนื้อที่มันคาบอยู่ก็หลุดร่วงลงน้ำไป กว่าจะคิดได้ว่าหมาคาบชิ้นเนื้อที่มันเห็นนั้นก็คือเงาในน้ำของมันเองก็สายไปเสียแล้ว

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า : โลภมาก ลาภหาย

แปล

The Dog and The Shadow

There was a dog running cross the bridge with a piece of meat in his mouth. While he was on the bridge, he looked down and saw another dog with larger piece of meat. He immediately let go of his own, and fiercely barked and attacked another dog to get that larger piece. But as he opened his mouth, his own meat was dropped into the water. So he lost both, but it was too late for him to realize that what he saw was his own shadow reflected in the water.

Moral of the story: Beware lest you lose from greedy.
