I spent some time on dictionaries (พจนานุกรม ราชบัณฑิตยสถาน - RID; Pali Text Society's Pali-English Dictionary - PED;...) again last week. (Learning should never stop until we can't learn anymore. For me that is when I can no longer think.) There are many issues in Thai language that I wish Thai language teachers would investigate or encourage their students to do so. How to read (or pronounce) words correctly is one such issue that even RID does not make it easy for (children and) beginners.
From ราชบัณฑิตยสถาน (Royal Society) mobile app: I learned that "Read and Write" contains only some 1,300 Thai words. In comparison to some 13,000 words with pronunciation in the 43,000 words dictionary (พจนานุกรม ราชบัณฑิตยสถาน -RID). So some 30,000 words are without how-to-read or pronounce! This offers a rich field for students to learn 'how to read' at school or by themselves; and that teachers can contribute greatly to make RID more complete. (I can supply a list of words without 'how-to-read' in RID to those interested - just give me an email address.)
[Incidentally, I have a suggestion that this app and the dictionary app should allow 'graceful' exit or quick termination of the app. At present one has to press 'Back' key many times -- as many as the number of look-up words. On Windows phones, long press on 'Back' allows 'killing of the app' via 'X' on the list of active apps.]
There are numerous summation and short courses on how to (learn to) read Thai. I will offer this one:
1) Learn the alphabet (พยัญชนะ ก ข...)
2) Learn the vowels (สระ แะ อา...) and the diacritic (วรรณยุต ไม้เอก ไม้โท...)
3) Learn ตัวสะกด (Tail or Final characters) in the 9 groups:
1. แม่ ก กา คำที่ไม่มีตัวสะกด
2. แม่ กก (- k) / ก / {ก ข ค ฆ}
3. แม่ กด (- t) / ด / {จ ด ต ถ ท ธ ฎ ฏ ฑ ฒ ช ซ ศ ษ ส}
4. แม่ กบ (- p) / บ / {บ ป พ ภ ฟ}
5. แม่ กน (- n) / น / {น ณ ญ ร ล ฬ}
6. แม่ กง (- ng) / ง / {ง}
7. แม่ กม (- m) / ม / {ม}
8. แม่ เกย (- j) / ย / {ย}
9. แม่ เกอว (- w) / ว / {ว}
4) Learn the meaning (ความหมาย), use (การใช้), etymology (ที่มา ของคำ),...
5) Learn the other 'marks' (ๆ ฯ ...)
[NB. Learners of English language may have already noted there are a lot more tail or final characters in English because the final characters have different final sounds. For examples bad, bash, bat, batch; or file, find, fine, and fire (and ending -fy [like specify, verify,...] would sound the same in Thai but sound different in English.]
We realize that a lot of Thai words come from Pali and Sanskrit. (Some from Khmer, Chinese and ...). [Native Thai words are usually words with simple lead or head characters and simple tail or final characters (ตัวสะกด) and with some compound vowels (สระประสม -- คือ สระเดี่ยวประสมกัน ๖ เสียง ได้แก่:
สระอุ กับ สระอู เป็น สระอัวะ
สระอิ กับ สระอะ เป็น สระเอียะ
สระอึ กับ สระอะ เป็น สระเอือะ
สระอู กับ สระอา เป็น สระอัว
สระอี กับ สระอา เป็น สระเอีย
สระอือ กับ สระอา เป็น สระเอือ) and words with a diacritic mark (วรรณยุต).
Quite often native Thai words are single 'syllable' (พยางค์เดียว). Please add your observations ;-) ]
Anyway, this is meant to be a Sunday read - nothing serious. So I will now move on to address the title
'พิสัย วิสัย ... สัยน์'.
We read about (North Korea) missile tests, in Thai newspapers the word พิสัย is used to mean the range that missiles can travel.

วิสัย [วิสะยะ-, วิไส] น. ความสามารถ เช่น อยู่ในวิสัยที่จะเลี้ยงดูบุตรภรรยาได้ เป็นเรื่องเหลือวิสัยที่จะทำได้; ขอบ, เขต, เช่น คามวิสัย โคจรวิสัย อยู่ในทัศนวิสัย. (ป.).
From PED:
visaya: locality; region; sphere; object; scope; sensual pleasure; footing. (m.)
** 'scope' in the meanings fits best
Though the missile tests appeared to have failed, the Doomsday Clock is set to 3 minutes to midnights (closer to the nuclear destruction of our world). How many Sundays we have left to enjoy? We would love to know. But any forewarning is as good as 'none' because much is depending on 'emotion' rather than 'reasons' which take much longer time to think thru.
Anyway I will leave you this weekend with a question from RID:
สัยน์ [ไส] น. สยนะ. (ป.; ส. ศยน).
So what does สัยน์ mean?
