Say & tell

(OLD) อธิบาย การใช้ say และ tell ดังนี้

Say กริยา ที่ต้องไม่ใช้ say ในประโยคที่มี บุคคลเป็นกรรม (object)

you say something. หรือ Say something to somebody.

บ่อยครั้งใช้ say เมื่อต้องการบอกบางคนด้วยคำพูดที่แน่นอน (exact words) เช่น

‘Sit down’, she said.;

Anne said, ‘I’m tired.’;

Anne said (that) she was tired.;

What did he say to you?

ไม่อาจใช้คำว่า ‘say about’ ที่ถูกต้องคือใช้ว่า ‘Say something about’ เช่น

I want to say something/a few words/a little about my family.

สามารถใช้ say ร่วมกับวลีหนึ่ง ได้เมื่อมิได้กล่าวถึง บุคคลที่พูดด้วยนั้น เช่น

She didn’t say what she intended to do.

Tell กริยา ตามปกติ ใช้ในประโยคที่มี บุคคลเป็นกรรม (object) และบ่อยครั้งมีกรรม สองคำ เช่น

Have you told him the news yet?

บ่อยครั้ง ใช้ร่วมกับ อนุประโยค (clause) ‘that’ เช่น

Anne told me (that) she was tired.

ตามปกติ ใช้ tell เมื่อบางคน เป็นผู้ให้ความจริงหรือข่าวสาร

บ่อยครั้ง ร่วมกับ what, where และ อื่นๆ เช่น

Can you tell me when the movie starts?

(BUT: Can you give me some information about the school?)

ยังมีการใช้ tell เมื่อคุณให้คำแนะนำแก่บางคน เช่น

The doctor told me to stay in bed.

The doctor told me (that) I had to stay in bed.

หรือ The doctor said (that) I had to stay in bed.
