We have floods - overflows or water and warnings in many places now and more to come for a month or two. Floods are yearly repeating weather events that replenish soil moisture, rivers and streams; wash and clean the land and waterways; redistribute nutrients to all living things. Yes flood can be dangerous, damaging and extremely inconvenient. But floods are also blessings ;-)
Often we have not only good things coming with floods, but also bad things. Toxic chemicals, diseases like cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. Lucky that we are in the 21st century, these diseases can be treated.
There are also fish, animals and insects that come with floods. Mosquitoes are a big concerns. Mossies are carriers of Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Yellow Fever and Zika. Here we are not so lucky, we do not have proven treatments for all cases. So, protection is better than cure . Avoid mossy bites!
Do you know that only female mosquitoes bite and draw blood to make eggs which they lay in stagnant water or moist places like flower pots? Male mosquitoes are ‘hippies’. They feed on nectar (in flowers). Some coarse sand and small pebbles pot dressing can stop the female laying eggs in flower pots. What about keeping some Venus flytrap plants to reduce the number of male mosquitoes? Maybe some sticky sugar syrup in small bowls or plates, if you don’t have sweet-toothed cats, dogs or children ;-)

Oxford R21/Matrix-M™ malaria vaccine receives WHO recommendation for use paving the way for global roll-out https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2023-10-02-oxford-r21matrix-m-malaria-vaccine-receives-who-recommendation-use-paving-way-global
–R21 is a subunit vaccine that delivers parts of a protein secreted by the sporozoite that are bundled up with a part of the hepatitis B virus that is known to trigger a strong immune response. (Similar to mRNA vaccine.)
–The Serum Institute of India has already established production capacity for 100 million doses per annum, which will be doubled over the next two years
– The World Health Organization’s recommendation today is required for UNICEF to procure and GAVI (Bill and Melinda Gates foundation –> the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation – today Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.) to purchase the vaccine, paving the way for vaccination of children in populations most at risk
–The R21 vaccine is the second malaria vaccine recommended by WHO, following the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine, which received a WHO recommendation in 2021.
–The vaccine (RTS,S/AS01) is administered via intramuscular injection (preferably to the deltoid region), over 3 dosing periods, each 1 month apart, which is consistent with administration of other WHO EPI vaccines.
