UNGA Dominated by Political Conflicts

The 78th United Nations General Assembly (New York 2023) dominates the media at moment. (See https://www.un.org/en/model-united-nations/general-assembly for the purpose and the proceeding.)

UNGA is supposedly to discuss international peace and security ; to propose amendments and/or new UN policies to promote international cooperation, the development of international law, the protection of human rights, and international collaboration on economic, social, cultural, educational and health issues ; to receive and discuss reports on status of UN member countries, to approve UN budget and to elect UNGA president and working committees.

UNGA78 is dominated by political conflicts so far. Issues on economics (poverty and monopoly), (lack of) education, (lack of) health (services and preventive measures), climate (change) have not emerged in sessions so far.

Political Conflicts come under jurisdiction of the United Nations Security Council which consists of 15 member countries (3 from Africa, 3 from Asia, 2 from Latin America and the Caribbean, 2 from Eastern Europe and 5 from Western Europe and others). 5 members (China, France, Russia, united Kingdom and United States) are permanent and have power to veto any UNSC decision. Other 10 members are elected every 2 years.

So, it seems this UNGA78 is being wasted on issues that would not settle any conflicts (due to ‘veto’) due to support from opposing permanent members of UNSC.

In the meanwhile, millions of people of the world (displaced by war, poverty and economics, climate change and other forms of oppression) and those in search of better education and better quality of life, everywhere, don’t even get a look on. International cooperation to relieve people of these disasters would be talked about in other forums, other conferences, other times.
