How do you answer these sort of questions from a 4 year old child?
“Why do people die?”
[My answer: Some people die because they have a big accident. Some people die because they are very old. And some people die because they don’t want to live.]
“But Joey is not old.” (Joey is a nickname for a baby kangaroo. This one is stuffed in a museum.)
[No, …but her mother died and she had no one to look after her. So, she died too.] (Mother Roo is stuffed too.)
“Will you die?”
[Yes. One day.]
“Then who will look after me? I don’t want to die.]
[Mum and Dad love you. They will look after you. Ta (that’s me! A grandfather) won’t die yet. We will have more fun together years and years – for a long long time.]
“When? … When do you die?”
[I’ll let you know when I die. But I am not dying yet.] (It’s a pun and a lie. We are all dying sooner or later. Right?] (But she seemed happy with this answer and moved on to look at other things.)
