A rubbish bin may not be what it appears on the streets of London. In May tech firm Renew fitted a dozen bins with a device that detects nearby smartphones and collects data.
...Renew bought the bomb-proof recycling bins ahead of last year's Olympics ... the trial has been misunderstood.'One of the core considerations that we have was what's our reach - how many people walk past our network,' he said... the purpose of the technology was to count footfall in areas where the pods were located, in the same way a newspaper measures its circulation. The information was gathered anonymously recording the distance, speed and manufacture of the smartphone or device that passed-by... the City of London Corporation asked Renew to stop collecting data.'The furthest this technology can go is to try to identify a device as having an affinity for a certain kind of shop or walk a certain kind of route.
