The conventional measurement of soil fertility status seemed
inappropriate to evaluate the long term land productivity, since
they can be readily change by land management and climatic
condition. Results revealed that soil pH, mineral nitrogen, total
carbon, and available P indicated condition of soil productivity at
short term. On the contrary, charge characteristics and
mineralogical properties i.e. weatherable clay mineral, oxides and
hydrous oxides of aluminum and iron, and sp value, did not show
appreciable change in the short term or by agricultural practice
such as field burning. The measurements of charge characteristic
and mineralogical property provided significant information that
can serve as indicators of long-term soil productivity potential in
the study area.
