The Adaptation to Thai Culture and the Effects of Rights Restrictions on the Quality of Life of Tai Yai without Thai Nationality in Chiangrai Province.

This dissrtation had the following study purposes: the adaptation to Thai culture of the Tai Yai without Thai nationality in Chingrai province; the right restrictions of the Tai Yai without Thai nationality in chiangrai province; the outcome of the adaptation on the quality of life of the Tai Yai without Thai nationality; and the effects of governmental rights restrictions on the quality of life of the Tai Yai without Thai nationality.

Research methodology of this study included (1) documentary research (2) qualitative research by using an anthropological research technique called in-depth interview of 40 key informants; and (3) quantitative research method by using survey research. Data were collected from 485 people by selecting from every other head of the households.

Qualitative data analyses were undertaken through the Descriptive Statistics as follows (1) descriptive ecological mapping, culture and customs of the Tai Yai at Huay Nam Kun sub district; (2) demographic data from 40 key informants ; and (3) interviewed of key informants, Quantitative data analyses were undertaken through the Statistical Programme for Social Science Research (SPSS) on a microcomputer. The results can be divided into two parts: (1) descriptive statistics such as percentages mean and standard deviation; and (2) correlation between the adaptation to Thai Culture and the effects of rights restrictions to the Tai Yai’s quality of life.

It can be concluded that (1) For the adaptation to Thai culture that effect good quality of life, mean of the variable “accept Thai customs and tradition” was the most important. The second and third ranked variables were Thai language usage and having Thai friends. (2) For the rights restrictions, it was found that the most important factors were the mean of asset possession , traveling outside of the area and the restriction on job application with Thais respectively; and (3) Those who had better adaptation to Thai culture and less rights restrictions enjoy more quality of life.
