Chiang Mai,Thailand's second largest city,is pleasantly located on the banks of the Ping River. It's fertile plain at an average elevation of 330 m.above sea level. The plain is partially surrounded by forested mountains and the west is dominated by Doi Suthep Mountain which rises over 1,100m. It is an old city with a long history of 700 years (built in 1296 A.D.). It was politically independent and geographically isolated. Such separate development has allowed the city to preserve its unique character and the idea of a Shangri-La typified by beautiful scenery, ancient temples, tradition customs and handicraft and friendly people. That's why it's named "THE ROSE OF THE NORTH" | ||||||||||||||||||
