What in a nickname and the Ministry of Culture ?

America has Tom, Dick and Harry. Thailand has Pig, Money and Fat.

 

 

 

The attempt to restore Thai identity or Thainess by Mr. Vira Rojpojchanarat of the Thai Culture Ministry through the using of traditional nicknames, sounds to me like stepping into George Orwell's 1984 (published in 1949).  Although, I have to say I didn't finish reading the entire book - the first few chapters were creepy enough.

There must be a more creative way of preserving our unique Thainess than nicknaming our children  "Yaay (big), Ouan (fat) and Dam (black)."
